Blackis…
Blackis… showcases my interpretation of the Black experience with photographs and shelved objects; showcasing ones closest to me and items that have played a part in most of my upbringing. After years of growing up not seeing positive reflections involving Black people or the Black experience in art, my thesis celebrates Blackness for what it is… Magical and Unlimited. Growing up with the wide range of ages in my house, I was able to get pieces of knowledge from everyone to mold me into who I am.
With each of the sections – Hair, Love, Us, and self titled–I recreated moments I connect to when thinking of happiness. Highlighting the portrayal of skin types allowed me to showcase our ranges of skin tones with different colors that complements the skin. For the still lifes I wanted to capture things near and dear with love. I captured images of my family and friends in the studio and in the household where I was able to show elegance and a sense of home from my personal spaces. Getting your hair done by mom, playing music with my grandpa or adding “classiness” to “ghetto” drinks. As a creative, I hold the ability to show someone the world from my eyes. As a Black Woman, I've used this process and time to be completely vulnerable. Blackis… artwork I created as a love letter to what makes me whole.
